If you are a self-proclaimed neat freak like myself, you look forward to (rather than dread) the inevitable spring-cleaning that happens sometime between when that frosty winter air begins to let up and spring break. But, if you’re a normal human being with a busy life, think of how great you’ll feel once it’s done and maybe reward your hard work with a get together at your sparkling abode. Here are my tips for a greener and more efficient spring cleaning:

1. Vinegar & water

take plain old white distilled vinegar and mix it with equal parts water in a spray bottle and voila! All-purpose cleaner in 5 minutes! I use this on windows, mirrors, countertops and other odds and ends. For tougher jobs (like cleaning the inside of your fridge) use vinegar, baking soda and hot water.

2. Use old shirts & fabrics as rags

never, EVER throw away old clothes. Even that shirt you destroyed at that glow paint party can be salvaged into a perfectly acceptable cleaning rag. Stop using paper towels for everything.

3. Products I like:

Seventh Generation Natural Kitchen Cleaner (& others)

Sun & Earth All Purpose

Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner

4. Make save, store, toss piles from your junk drawers

don’t throw away things that you can use again – check out these crafty sites:

5. Recycle clothes

Places like Rag o Rama or Plato’s Closet will give you store credit or money for your gently used clothes.

Also, hosting a clothing swap party are is of the best ways to bring all your pack rat friends together in one room. I’ve gotten some of my favorite pieces from clothing swaps.

6. Donate to your favorite local thrift store & recycle things you can’t

-as a last resort for things you cannot re-purpose to or find a better home for yourself.
