Spring is just around the corner (hopefully), which means more harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables to use in your outdoor cooking. Luckily, there are dozens of farmers’ markets right here in and around Atlanta to pick up some fresh, local treats. While some operate seasonally, most are open year round and only closed when necessary, like for the cold winter weather.
The DeKalb Farmers Market, located at 3000 E Ponce de Leon Ave, has been providing great service for 33 years. It is a family-run business that embodies all the principles behind a farmers market: organic, locally grown food and a friendly atmosphere. In addition to selling fresh food products, the Market also provides natural canned items, as well as caterers and an on site cafe. Plus, they have a recycling center where you can bring all of the goods you know you shouldn’t throw away!
Located in suburban Atlanta, the Decatur Farmers Market offers many of the same goods as the DeKalb Market, just on a smaller scale. It supports local farmers and the surrounding neighborhood, offering a local, inexpensive opportunity to get sustainable foods.
There are countless numbers of reasons why Farmers’ Markets are a good option. While you’re offered a product whose freshness and appeal speak for itself, there are many unseen benefits as well:
- Most times there is less transportation and packaging involved than buying commercially, an important aspect for any eco-conscious individual
- By going to a local Farmers’ Market you support local farmers, and thus your local economy. Also, you get to interact with said farmers, they will often give you good advice about what you are buying because they have such extensive knowledge of their product—I bet you can’t say that about your local grocery store employee!
- Finally—Most employees are friendly people who are invested and truly care about the product they are selling you.
Also, if you are lucky, some Farmers’ Markets give out free samples!
